Is he (Goethe) not recorded as having said: "Do not all the achievements of an (improviser's) predecessors and contemporaries rightfully belong to him? Why should he shrink from picking flowers where he finds them? Only by making the riches of the others our own do we bring anything great into being." Or, still more forcefully, to Eckermann he said: "There is all this talk about originality, but what does it amount to? As soon as we are born the world begins to influence us, and this goes on till we die. And anyway, what can we in fact call our own except the energy, the force, the will!" Except not less than everything, for an (improviser), I am compelled to murmur as I read this, for what does the anxiety of influence concern but the energy, the force, the will? Are they one's own, or emanations from the other, from the precursor?

Do words mean anything?
Energy, Force Will. Uh, excuse me, those are all Wilhelm Reich kinda words--not musical ones. So like, what's up with that? What is this 'energy?' What is this 'force?' What is this 'will?' Is the answer to be found in diatonic harmony? A Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone? Knowing the 'correct' ii-V-I pattern?
Nope. It's to be found in the realm of the woo-woo.
Energy/Force/Will. That's woo-woo. True or false? Straight outta 'the new age.' Crystals, chimes, incense, dream catchers, the whole bit. ALL OF IT.

So, are improvisations one's own, or are they emanations from the precursor?
Are poems spells? Are improvisations spells?
Are improvisations a 'channeling?' A 'contacting?'

Wilhelm Reich is the woo-woo Rosetta Stone.
It's funny (to me) that Bloom and not Reich gets the attention. copyright, © 2007 Stanley Zappa visit us on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/newtexture |
