Font Festival Time. Wooo Hoooo! Go get em!

Festival of New Trumpet Music.

But hold on...where . is . the . Dixon . . .

No Dixon?

No Dixon again?

I saw the schedule here, but sadly the letters and words are so very small--maybe Dixon is playing the event and maybe I just can't see his name.

So then I looked here! (With an exclamation point!) And still no Dixon! (With an exclamation point!)

Here are just some of the things I did see:

explorations of the areas between rock and free improvised music (rad exclamation point!)

The evocative, elegant and comfortably familiar, (non threatening exclamation point!)

145 pages of notated music, (145 exclamation points!)

work that has earned huge write-ups in the Wall Street Journal
(exclamation point and a dollar sign or two, but no more crossword puzzle exclamation point)

Birgit Ulher (clinamen, that is a steering away from who question mark exclamation point)

Nate Wooley (clinamen , that is a steering away from who question mark exclamation point)

Font commissions, A U.S. Premier, and a consortium of musician-led grass roots music organizations in the city with two goals (all the remaining punctuation on the keyboard in one long grand log exclamation point)

In and amongst all that, nary a speck of Dixon. (colon followed by open parenthesis exclamation point)

Oh well. Vis a vis Dixon, I guess it's "easy come, easy go." Yeah, sure, one could argue that it is Dixon and Dixon alone to whom we owe our modern conception of the trumpet, but then again, one could argue Dixon's irrelevance ('you've heard one Dixon record you've heard them all') and still be a part of. And since being a part of is the name of the game anyhow, then Adam Smith exclamation point!

To be fair, another festival of new trumpet music without Dixon might be for a very good reason. Dixon again being excluded from the Font Festival may very well be the result of factors far more tacit, negotiations far more delicate and strategies designed to advance our musical culture far more complex than what the uninitiated could ever hope to comprehend. (Michael Leeden exclamation point.)

Mind you I have never been a curator, and so let me be the first to admit I have no idea how hard it must be to 'curate.' I imagine it must be very hard.

+ + +

Everybody got their back-to-school clothes yet?
